Mochi Drive Guitar Overdrive Pedal

Mochi Drive

A new take on medium-gain overdrive

The Mochi Drive is an overdrive with an expressive amp-like feel and a chewy, harmonically rich tone. Our goal when designing this overdrive was to combine the best qualities of a JFET “mu amp” (the front end of many amp-in-a-box overdrives) and a single-BJT overdrive (an Electra-style distortion). The result is an overdrive that feels very much like an amp but has a complex, cutting tone with a slightly rough edge. It works great with your guitar volume knob all the way up but it can be even more expressive with your guitar volume turned down some.

It’s a medium-gain overdrive that is great for blues, rock, or jazz players looking for a new overdrive sound that’s harmonically rich and expressive. It’s not designed or voiced for metal, but it can be used in front of another drive or distortion to add some of its character to an overall heavier sound.

We spent over a year developing the Mochi Drive. Because there are so many great overdrives available, we wanted to create something new and different that you’ll want to keep on your board. Our references while designing the Mochi Drive ranged from the OD-250 to the HM-2. Our goal from the beginning was to create a new type of overdrive that has medium gain but also has a thick single-note tone. We wanted to have a good muted tone but also have a slightly soft edge to the sound. It’s a balance that was hard to achieve and in the end is a combination of two different types of overdrives that we don’t believe have been combined before in a single effect.

Other design details:

  • Enclosure size is 4.4″ L x 2.4″ W x 1.2″ H (112 x 60.5 x 31 mm).
  • Enclosure is professionally powder coated.
  • Bypass switching is true bypass.
  • Can be powered by a 9V battery or a 9V DC, center-negative (−) power supply with a 5.5 x 2.1 mm barrel connector. Bottom cover can be removed to install a 9V battery.
  • We use as many US-made components as we can. The JFETs in the Mochi Drive are made in the US!
  • There are two trimmers in the circuit that are used to accommodate differences in components – mostly differences in the JFETs. Each Mochi Drive is set up to have a consistent sound, but each one still sounds slightly different, so yours will be unique!
  • Each circuit is built using high-quality through-hole components and is fully tested with a guitar before being approved for sale.
